Objective To have knowledge about the initial screening in the laboratory for thalassemia among persons having premarital examination so as to provide theoretical basis for reducing incidence rate of thalassemia in the newborns and improve the population quality.Method A free initial screening for thalassemia was conducted in 2 146persons having premarital examination in Huizhou City

Guangdong Province from January 2009to June 2009and the data were statistically analyzed.Results 153cases had positive results in the initial screening for thalassemia with a detection rate of 7.13%

including 62males accounted for 5.54%and 91females accounted for 8.86%

and the differences were statistically significant（p<0.05）.Conclusion Detection rate of thalassemia in persons having premarital examination is relatively high

which in the female is higher than the male.It’s necessary for persons having premarital examination to screen the thalassemia.
