Objective To have knowledge about the visual acuity status among freshmen who enrolled in the year 2006-2007 in Beihua University so as to provide a realistic basis for improving the visual acuity of college students.Method 8 737 freshmen enrolled in Beihua University in the year 2006-2007 were chosen to have their visual acuity status checked and the results were statistically analyzed. Results A total of 5 058 myopes were detected

in which there were 2 162 myopes in 2006 and 2 896 myopes in 2007 with a respective myopia rate of 52.37% and 62.83%
and the differences were statistically significant(p<0.01);Among the myopic freshmen
the ones suffered form severe myopia in 2006 and 2007 accounted for 83.16% and 83.94% of the total myopes respectively;in the two years
the male myopes were 1 849 and the female ones were 3 209 with a respective myopia rate of 54.83% and 59.81%
