Researches on the Undergraduates’ Compensation Effects Of Self-Evaluations in Social Comparison
Objective To learn whether compensation of self-evaluation exists when individuals engage in social comparison.Method In reading various materials
(Experiment 1:Compared with those who are better
there was a far difference or a slight difference;Compared with those who are poorer
there was a far difference or a slight difference;Experiment 2:when competing with those who are better
having a cooperation with those who are better;when competing with those who are poorer
having a cooperation with those who are poorer)
self-evaluation vocabulary rating scale has been used to test 80 undergraduates’ self-evaluation of learning ability and characteristics. Results In terms of self-evaluation of the characteristics
the score of upward comparision was higher than that of downward comparison;the score of far upward comparision was higher than that of slightly upward comparision;the score of upward competition was higher than that of upward cooperation. The differences were statistically significant (P<0.05);while in the self-evaluation of the learning ability
the above comparison between the two groups was statistically insignificant. Conclusion There was no difference in the field of self-evaluation
while in the non-related fields
there were differences in the evaluation.Compared with those who were higher achievers
undergraduates’self-evaluation in related fields will be increased so as to get compensation
and the greater the difference
the greater compensation;if the higher achievers were rivals
the compensation was greater than were collaborators.
