Objective
2
To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pigtail catheter versus chest tube in the treatment of patients with pneumothorax.
Method
2
Clinical trials of pigtail catheter versus chest tube in patients with pneumothorax were collected by searching databases of PubMed
Cochrane Library
Embase
and Google Scholar up to November 26
2015. Methodological index for non-randomized studies (MINORS) was used for methodological quality assessment of the included literatures. Software Revman Manager 5.1 was used for meta-analysis.
Results
2
Four literatures (1 randomized controlled trial
3 non-randomized controlled trials) containing a total of 522 patients were included for analysis. According to the treatment
the patients were categorized into pigtail catheter group (
n
=267) and chest tube group (
n
=255). The meta-analysis data showed that usage of pigtail catheter significantly reduced postoperative duration of tube insertion compared to the chest tube group (weighted mean difference=-0.33
95%
CI
: -0.58~-0.07
P
<
0.05). However
no statistical differences in success rate(relative ratio=0.94
95%
CI
: 0.87~1.02
P
>
0.05)
postoperative hospital stay (WMD=-2.33
95%
CI
:-6.87~2.22
P
>
0.05) and complications incidence (
RR
=0.73
95%
CI
: 0.29~1.86
P
>
0.05)were found between the 2 groups.
Conclusion
2
Compared to common chest tube used in the treatment of pneumothorax
employment of pigtail catheter reduces the days of tube insertion. Nevertheless
success rate
postoperative hospital stay and incidence of complications are not significantly different between the 2 methods of interventions. Pigtail catheter may be effectively useful for closed thoracic drainage in patients with pneumothorax.
