Objective To study the expression of apoptosis inhibited gene survivin and its relationship with the expressions of bcl-2 and bax in meningiomas. Methods Expressions of survivin
bcl-2 and bax proteins were detected by immunohistochemical method (S-P) in 60 samples of meningiomas respectively. The correlation between them was analyzed in combination with clinical pathological data. Results The expression rate of survivin protein was 32.0% in gradeⅠ
60.0%
in grade Ⅱ
and 86.7% in gradeⅢ
with significant differences among the 3 groups (
P
<0.05). The
positive ratio was closely correlated with aggressive behavior (
P
<0.05) and peritumoral edema (
P
<0.05) respectively. Expressions of bcl-2 and bax proteins was positively and negatively correlated with the expression of survivin protein respectively. Conclusion The expression of survivin in meningiomas is closely correlated with its malignancy. Survivin may play an important role in the pathogenesis of malignant meningiomas. Bcl-2 may play a synergic role while bax an antagonistic role to survivin gene in the formation and progression of meningiomas.
