Objective To explore the value of electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in the diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD). Methods Thirty-two patients diagnosed as CHD by TTE underwent EBCT for cardiovascular examination. The results were compared with the results by cardiovascular angiography and from surgery. Results The total diagnosis accordance rate by EBCT was 87.5% (28/32) and that by TTE was 78.1% (25/32). The diagnosis accuracy rate in extracardiac deformities and ventricular-arterial connections was 96.6% (57/59)
higher than 66.1% (39/59) by TTE. However
the diagnosis accuracy rate in intracardiac deformities by TTE was 97.7% (43/44)
higher than 81.8% (36/44) by EBCT. The combination of EBCT and TTE can raise the diagnosis accuracy rate to 96.9% (31/32). Conclusion EBCT is of significant value in CHD diagnosis
especially in the diagnosis of extracardiac deformities and ventricular-arterial connections deformities. The combination of EBCT and TTE can raise the diagnosis accuracy rate of various kinds of CHD.
