Objective To observe the effect of traditional Chinese medicine component curcumin on intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) subsets and dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colonic inflammation in ulcerative colitis mice
and investigate the potential therapeutic mechanism of curcumin in inflammatory bowel disease. Methods Sixty adult male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into 3 groups: normal group
DSS group and curcumin treatment group. Disease activity index (DAI) score and HE staining were used to evaluate the inflammatory conditions. The change of IEL subsets was analyzed by flow cytometry. Results Compared with the normal group
the DSS group showed higher DAI score (P0.01)
lower proportion of CD8αα subset (P0.01) and TCRγδ subset (P0.01)
and higher proportion of CD4 subset (P0.05). Interestingly
the curcumin treatment group showed lower DAI score (P0.01)
higher proportion of CD8αα subset (P0.01) and TCRγδ subset (P0.01)
and lower proportion of CD4 subset (P0.05) compared with the DSS group. Conclusion Curcumin attenuates DSS-induced ulcerative colitis through regulating IEL subsets in the mice.
