In this article

  the development of lumbar pedicle screw and plate fixation system was reviewed. We summarized the structural shortcomings of the plate system and analyzed the reasons why it had been replaced by the pedicle screw and rod system. We also introduced the contribution in the implant development by Chinese researchers. The pedicle screw and plate system is suitable for single segment lumbar interbody fusion surgery from the perspective of biomechanics

especially for the treatment of spondylolisthesis. A novel pedicle screw and plate system should be designed and applied to minimally invasive spinal surgery.
