Objective To determine the expression of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit h (EIF3h)and Ki-67 in human colorectal carcinoma and their clincopathologic significances. Methods The expression of EIF3h and Ki-67 was detected by immunohistochemical EnVision method in 76 tissue samples of colorectal carcinoma
35 samples of colorectal adenoma and 20 samples of colorectal mucosa from 10 cm away from carcinoma. Results The positive rates for EIF3h expression were 86.84% (66/76)
31.43% (11/35) and 10.00% (2/20) re
spectively
in the samples of colorectal carcinoma
adenoma and colorectal mucosa 10 cm away from carcinoma
and significant differences were found among them (
P
0.01). The expression of EIF3h in colorectal carcinoma was found to be correlated with local invasion and lymph node metastasis (
P
0.01)
but not associated with sex
age
tumor size and histological differentiation(
P
0.05). In colorectal carcinoma
there was remarkable positive correlation between the expression of EIF3h and that of Ki-67 (r=0.42
P
0.01). Conclusion The strong expression of EIF3h may play an important role in the pathogenesis and progression of colorectal carcinoma. It is helpful to detect EIF3h expression together with Ki-67 in the diagnosis and prognosis of colorectal carcinoma.
