Objective To determine the osteogenic potential of the chitosan/multiwall carbon nanotube (CS/MWNTs) composites. Methods Calcium phosphate coated on the surface of CS/MWNTs composites was induced through simulated body fluid. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy
scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to determine its characteristics. The membranes were cultured with bovine serum protein solution and rat bone marrow stromal stem cells. Results Nanoscopic hydroxyapatite was formed on the CS/MWNTs composites at low MWNTs concentrations
and the dispersion of the multiwall carbon nanotube
affected the crystallite size of the nanoscopic hydroxyapatite
with the smallest size of 9.6 nm at a mass percentage of 1.0%. The composites adsorbed serum proteins
and promoted cells proliferation
with best effect at mass percentage of 1.0% (
P
0.05). Conclusion The CS/MWNT composites have the osteogenic potential.
