Objective To evaluate the effect of a 3-year consecutive behavior intervention among female sex workers for preventing HIV/AIDS. Methods The consecutive behavior intervention among female sex workers (FSWs) was conducted in Shapingba District of Chongqing
China. The pre- and post-intervention questionnaires were investigated among 400 and 402 FSWs between 2006 and 2009
respectively
based on stratified sampling and convenience sampling. Data about HIV/AIDS knowledge
behavior
and intervention acceptance of FSWs were collected for evaluation. Results After 3-year consecutive behavior intervention
the awareness rate of HIV/AIDS knowledge increased from 50.5% in 2006 to 86.6% in 2009 (Chi square=121.04
P0.01); the rate of condom usage in the last sexual behavior with clients increased from 77.5% to 91.3% (Chi square=28.99
P0.01); the rate of persistent condom use in the last month increased from 22.8% to 56.2% (Chi square=93.96
P0.01); the rate of behavior intervention acceptance increased from 5.8% to 83.8% (Chi square=494.11
P0.01); the rate of counseling and testing acceptance increased from 1.8% to 67.2% (Chi square=379.46
P0.01). Conclusion The consecutive behavior intervention helps FSWs acquire more HIV/AIDS knowledge as well as adopt a safer sexual behavior.
