Objective To assess the respiratory and circulatory changes and incidence of complications in severe trauma patients after cervical sympathetic ganglia block (SB). Methods Thirty trauma patients (age 20 to 50)we treated in our Trauma Center from January 2009 to October 2009 were allocated into 2 groups with no difference in sex and age: the therapy group (n=18) and the control group (n=12). Under close monitoring
th
e patients of therapy group was treated with 0.75% lidocaine hydrochloride for right cervical sympathetic ganglia block (SB)
while the control group with normal saline. The routine therapy was same. The pulse oxygen saturation (SpO

systolic blood pressure (SBP)
heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (RR) at 10 and 50 min after block and the incidence of common complications were recorded. Results In therapy group
the pre-block HR was (115.9±10.5) beats per minute (bpm)
which was significant different with that in 10 min post-block HR (101.6±3.6 )bpm

and with that of 50 min post-block HR [(104.0±4.6)bpm

. There was no significant changes in SpO

pH value
RR and SBP were observed in the 2 groups pre- and post-block (P0.05). The occurrence rate of complications was 20% in therapy group and no severe complication happened. Conclusion Right cervical sympathetic ganglia block has an obvious impact on the trauma patients in the early stage by slowing down the rapid heartbeat
and no effect on the respiratory rate and blood-gas analysis
