Objective To evaluate the value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the comprehensive evaluation of the spinal injuries. Methods Data from 50 patients with spinal injuries were analyzed retrospectively. Results For all patients
cervical vertebral fracture
cervical thoracic vertebral compound fracture
thoracic vertebral fracture
lumbar vertebral fracture and thoracolumbar vertebral compound fracture were found in 15
6
11
15 and 3 cases
respectively. Vertebral body and appendix fractures were found in 54 cases on X-ray plain films. Vertebral body fractures and appendix fractures were found in 59 and 6 cases by CT. CT also showed vertebral dislocations and spinal stenosis in 18 cases. MRI revealed 61 cases of vertebral body fractures
103 cases of vertebral body and appendix contusion and 20 cases of spinal cord injuries (2 cases combined with spinal fractures)
5 cases of epidural hematomas and 11 cases of traumatic intervertebral disk hernia at the same time. In the cases of cervical vertebral injuries
there were 7 cases of vertebral artery injuries (3 cases of spasms and 4 cases of occlusions). Conclusion MRI could comprehensively evaluate the spinal injuries
suggesting MRI may have significant guiding significance in the establishment of treatment programs and the prediction of the prognosis of patients with spinal injuries.
