Objective   To compare the efficacies of Nuss procedure and modified Ravitch procedure in treating pectus excavatum.    Methods   Totally 100 cases of funnel chest who received repair operation from January 2005 to July 2007 were followed up for 3 years．Among them

50 cases (7.37±2.31 years old) underwent NUSS procedures and 50 (6.25±2.18 years old) modified Ravitch procedures. The conditions before

complications and parents satisfaction scores were compared.    Results   Between the 2 groups

blood loss

and duration of hospitalization were shorter in Nuss group than modified Ravitch group. The cost of hospitalization

postoperative complications

the time to pain were lesser in Ravitch group. In Nuss group

complications occurred in 9 cases (18%)

including 2 pneumothorax

2 subcutaneous emphysema

2 bar dislocation

2 atelectasis and 1 subcutaneous fluid. In Ravitch group complication rate was 4% (2 cases)

including 1 pneumonia and 1 subcutaneous fluid. There was no fetal complication observed.    Conclusion   If proper indication is chosen

Nuss procedure and modified Ravitch procedure both result in an excellent cosmetic outcome for pectus excavatum.
