Objective To discuss the measures of perioperative management and the prevention of complication for diabetic patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Methods The preventive and therapeutic measures during perioperative period and follow-up outcome in 73 patients with diabetes mellitus who had accepted total knee arthroplasty were analysed retrospectively. Results The average blood glucose level was (13.2±1.2)mmol/L on admission
and was controlled to (7.0±1.0)mmol/L before operation. The average blood glucose level was (7.4±1.1)mmol/L after operation. Of all patients
only 3 knees (3.7%) developed delayed wound healing. No deep infection occurred. Six patients (8.2%) developed urinary tract infection and 11 (13.5%) developed deep vein thrombosis. The HSS score was improved after operation from average 27.6 points preoperatively to 84.2 points postoperatively. The excellent and good rate was 94.7%. Conclusion Effectively controlling blood glucose level is crucial to prevent postoperative complications of total knee arthroplasty. Other measures such as using antibiotics and antibiotic bone cement
preventing thrombosis are also mandatory for diabetic patients to achieve a successful operation and uneventful postoperative recovery.
