Application of an integrated teaching clinic-ward model based on outcome-based education in standardized training of traditional Chinese medicine residents in the department of pulmonary disease
To evaluate the effects of an integrated teaching clinic-ward model based on the concept of outcome-based education (OBE) in standardized training of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) residents in the department of pulmonary disease.
Methods
2
In this single-center
non-concurrent controlled quasi-experimental study
48 TCM residents who rotated from January to June 2025 in the Department of Pulmonary Disease
The Second Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine were assigned to the control group and received the traditional teaching model
and another 48 TCM residents who rotated from July to December 2025 were assigned to the experimental group and received the integrated teaching clinic-ward model based on the OBE concept. General characteristics
theoretical examination scores
objective structured clinical examination scores
changes in mini-clinical evaluation exercise (Mini-CEX) scores
common procedural skills assessment scores
and teaching satisfaction were compared between the two groups. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0. Measurement data were analyzed using the
t
test or repeated-measures analysis of variance
and count data were analyzed using the
χ
2
test.
Results
2
There were no significant differenc
es between the two groups in age
sex
training year
pre-rotation total theoretical examination score
or the first Mini-CEX score. After rotation
the experimental group had higher total theoretical examination score than the control group (78.59±3.18 vs. 75.52±3.43
t
=4.54
P
0.001)
higher objective structured clinical examination total score (79.04±3.25 vs. 73.82±4.31
t
=6.71
P
0.001)
greater improvement in Mini-CEX score (1.15±0.15 vs. 0.88±0.12
t
=9.74
P
0.001)
and higher total procedural skills score (47.11±1.71 vs. 44.41±2.11
t
=6.89
P
0.001). The overall satisfaction score and satisfaction rate were also higher in the experimental group (both
P
0.001). No significant differences were observed between the two groups in scores for formula and Chinese patent medicine application
peripheral oxygen saturation measurement
oxygen administration
or perceived improvement in competence.
Conclusions
2
The integrated teaching clinic-ward model based on the OBE concept can improve theoretical knowledge
clinical comprehensive competence
workplace performance
and some specialty-specific skills of TCM residents in the department of pulmonary disease
