Artificial intelligence-enhanced teaching of neurological physical examination: an exploratory study on its effectiveness
To construct a new artificial intelligence (AI)-enhanced teaching model for neurological physical examination and to evaluate its application effect in the teaching of clinical medicine undergraduates.
Methods
2
Students from the Class of 2021 (control group
n
=32) and students from the Class of 2022 (experimental group
n
=35) of the Ottawa-Shanghai Joint School of Medicine
Shanghai Jiao Tong
University School of Medicine were selected. The control group had the flipped classroom model and was learning through case-based teaching. The experimental group was given the novel AI-enhanced teaching model
which consists of the AI-assisted lesson preparation system and the "stick figure examination mini-program" and "AI simulated examiner". After the course ended
a comprehensive evaluation of the teaching effect was conducted through methods such as theoretical knowledge assessment
objective structured clinical examination (OSCE)
multi-dimensional observation and evaluation by teachers
and student satisfaction questionnaire survey. SPSS 27.0 was used for the statistical analysis of the data. All measurement data were expressed as the mean plus or minus the standard deviation
and independent samples
t
-tests were used to compare groups. A significance level of
α
=0.05 was used.
Results
2
Both the theoretical knowledge assessment score and the OSCE score for the experimental group were higher than those for the control group (88.43±9.67 vs. 80.31±9.67
P
=0.001; 91.33±2.21 vs. 84.51±6.42
P
<
0.001). Teacher ratings were all higher in general performance
professional competence
clinical thinking
and humanistic concern in the experimental group compared with the control group (all
P
<
0.01). Student satisfaction scores in the experimental group were higher than those in the control group for 9 aspects
such as inspiring the interest in learning
improving self-study ability
and deepening knowledge understanding (
P
<
0.01).
Conclusions
2
The novel AI-enhanced teaching model can effectively improve medical students' grasp of the theory and operational standardization
as well as clinical thinking ability in the learning of neurological physical examination and has been widely accepted and praised. It provides a new way with certain popularization prospects for medical skill teaching.
