A survey on the current use and ethical awareness of artificial intelligence among medical trainees
and demand preferences of clinical medical trainees regarding artificial intelligence ethics in medical education (AIEME)
and provide a basis for curriculum design.
Methods
2
In January 2026
cluster sampling was adopted to select medical trainees from The First Affiliated Hospital
Zhejiang University School of Medicine as the subjects. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 304 medical trainees who participated voluntarily. Data processing was performed using SPSS 20.0 software. The Mann-Whitney
U
test and Kruskal-Wallis
H
test were adopted to examine the differences in the distribution of AI use frequency and AI ethics awareness among medical trainees with different genders and professional identities. Cochran's
Q
test was used to explore the differences in preferences for AIEME course formats and supporting measures within each category of medical trainees.
Results
2
A total of 98.68% (300/304) of medical trainees had used AI tools
with postgraduates having the highest usage proportion. Most trainees had a basic understanding of AIEME. Some differences were observed in perceived challenges of AI use and ethical training needs among medical trainees with different genders and professional identities. Overall
75.33% (229/304) of medical trainees believed it was necessary to offer AIEME-related courses. Online courses (57.89%
176/304) were the preferred format
followed by case discussions (46.38%
141/304). Improving AI safety management systems (76.64%
233/304) was the most urgent supporting measure.
Conclusions
2
It is necessary to construct a hierarchical AI medical education system combining digital courses and case discussions based on the demand characteristics of medical trainees
improve the supervision mechanism
and promote the standardized application of AI technology in the field of medical education.
