Latent class analysis of continuing medical education needs among medical staff in non-provincial capital municipal tertiary hospitals of Guangdong, China
To identify the latent class characteristics of continuing medical education (CME) needs among medical staff in non-provincial capital municipal grade-A tertiary hospitals of Guangdong
China
and to provide a reference for constructing a precise regional medical supply system and strengthening the radiation and driving function of municipal-level medical centers during the "15th Five-Year Plan" period.
Methods
2
A cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to December 2025 among participants of 156 "Guangdong Medical Academic Express" sessions (held within Guangdong Province but outside Guangzhou). With future expectations as classification indicators
the latent class analysis was performed using R software. Multivariable logistic regression was employed to analyze the impact of demographic characteristics on class membership.
Results
2
A total of 3
493 valid questionnaires were included. Model fit indices indicated that a four-class model was optimal (entropy=0.741). The CME needs of municipal medical staff were categorized into four latent classes
i.e.
all-round enterprising
frontier-pursuing
risk-preventing
and front-line clinical-core
with each class showing significant heterogeneity in knowledge dimension preferences. Specifically
the all-round enterprising class exhibited high demand across all dimensions; the frontier-pursuing and front-line clinical-core classes focused heavily on the iteration of clinical diagnosis and treatment capabilities; the risk-preventing class demonstrated higher sensitivity toward physician-patient communication and risk management. The regression analysis revealed that specialty and professional title were factors influencing class membership.
Conclusions
2
The CME needs of medical staff in non-provincial capital municipal grade-A tertiary hospitals exhibited significant "pyramid-like" heterogeneity. A stratified and categorized precise supply system should be constructed by implementing research incubation
standardization and homogenization of diagnosis and treatment
and competency foundation projects to facilitate high-quality regional medical development.
