A study of adaptation challenges and coping strategies for medical students in Sino-foreign cooperative education programs from the perspective of internationalization at home: a qualitative analysis based on in-depth interviews
To explore the primary challenges faced by medical students in Sino-foreign cooperative education programs during their adaptation process and the coping strategies they employed
and provide a basis for improving the quality of these programs.
Methods
2
A qualitative study was conducted. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were carried out with 20 students enrolled in Sino-foreign cooperative education programs at the Chongqing Medical University-University of Leicester Joint Institute. The interview data were analyzed using Nvivo 14 software through a three-level coding process (open
axial
and selective coding).
Results
2
The open coding process identified 41 initial categories and 328 reference points. Through axial coding
10 main categories were derived. Ultimately
three core categories were refined: language adaptation difficulties
academic and cultural adaptation difficulties
and psychosocial adaptation difficulties. A comprehensive theoretical model was constructed by integrating the other categories around these core categories. The findings revealed that medical students in Sino-foreign cooperative education programs primarily faced challenges such as barriers with specialized English
difficulty adapting to new teaching models
and stress from cross-cultural communication. Students who adapted successfully tended to employ strategies including proactive learning
resource integration
and psychological self-adjustment.
Conclusions
2
The adaptation process for medical students in Sino-foreign cooperative education programs is multidimensional. Constructing a support system that addresses language preparation
academic transition
and psychological well-being is of significant importance.
