The mediating effect of circadian rhythm type between sleep quality and work immersion in nursing interns
To investigate the current status of circadian rhythm type
sleep quality
and work immersion among nursing interns
and to explore the pathway through which circadian rhythm type and sleep quality influence work immersion.
Methods
2
A convenience sampling method was used to select 300 nursing interns from five undergraduate universities in Gansu Province who were interning at three Grade A tertiary teaching hospitals in Lanzhou from December 2024 to February 2025. A general information questionnaire
the Circadian Rhythm Type Scale
the Simplified Work Immersion Scale
and the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) were used as research instruments. SPSS 28.0 software was used for descriptive analysis and Spearman correlation analysis of the general information
circadian rhythm types
PSQI scores
and work immersion scores of nursing interns. Amos 27.0 software was used for mediating effect analysis. A structural equation model was constructed between circadian rhythm type
sleep quality
and work immersion by fitting the model using the maximum likelihood method.
Results
2
The work immersion score for nursing interns was 42 (28
54). The score for the Flexibility/Rigidity Subscale of Circadian Rhythm Type Scale was 18.22±5.51
and the score for the Languid/Vigorous Subscale was 16.53±6.58. The proportions of flexible and vigorous types were 48.62% (141/290) and 24.14% (70/290)
respectively. The PSQI score was 7 (5
14)
and 64.14% (186/290) of nursing interns experienced sleep problems. Pathway analysis revealed that circadian rhythm type partially mediated the relationship between sleep quality and work immersion in nursing interns. The mediating effects of flexibility/rigidity and languid/vigorous types were -1.084 and -2.244
accounting for 29.66% and 61.39% of the total effect
respectively. The total indirect effect accounted for 91.05% of the total effect.
Conclusions
2
The circadian rhythm type of nursing interns is a mediating variable between sleep quality and work immersion. In the future
nursing internship managers should focus on improving the sleep quality of nursing interns through comprehensive measures such as reasonable shift scheduling
environmental optimization
and psychological adjustment. This will help nursing interns adjust their circadian rhythm type
recover promptly from night shift work
and enhance their level of work immersion.
