Current situation and implications of oncology and materials science interdisciplinary teaching under the background of medicine-engineering integration
The integration of medicine and engineering has become a national strategic priority in medical education. The deep intersection of materials science and oncology is injecting new momentum into the innovation of tumor diagnosis and treatment technologies. This article focuses on interdisciplinary teaching at the intersection of oncology and materials science. It first reviews the progress of materials science in early cancer screening
precision diagnosis
and innovative treatment
as well as the new demands these advances place on medical education. It then analyzes the current challenges from four dimensions: knowledge integration
faculty development
evaluation systems
and platform construction. Finally
it proposes systematic pathways for reform. Regarding curriculum
a modular "materials-biology-clinical" integrated curriculum is recommended. At the undergraduate level
fundamental materials science courses should be incorporated into the compulsory curriculum; at the graduate level
advanced interdisciplinary courses such as "Introduction to Materials Technology in Tumor Diagnosis and Treatment" should be offered. Regarding faculty development
the dual-supervisor model and multidisciplinary mentor group model should be promoted
along with mechanisms for faculty practice capacity building. Regarding evaluation
a "competency-based
multi-stakeholder collaborative" framework should be established
shifting student assessment from "knowledge testing" to "competency assessment
" and incorporating interdisciplinary teaching contributions and clinical translation guidance ability into faculty evaluation. Regarding platform construction
a "four-in-one" integrated ecosystem should be developed
including regular communication mechanisms
interdisciplinary research programs
university-industry collaboration platforms
and large-scale instrument sharing platforms. Current reforms still face practical challenges such as disciplinary barriers and resource allocation conflicts. It is recommended to establish an interdisciplinary teaching committee to coordinate reform efforts and promote the approval of "collaborative education centers" to provide institutional support.
