Curriculum design and training effectiveness of courses for advanced life support core skills based on the OBE concept
To investigate the effectiveness of training advanced life support core skills based on the outcome-based education (OBE) concept
and provide a reference and basis for further improving specialized emergency training.
Methods
2
The training courses were constructed through literature review and expert validation. Between July 2021 and March 2025
a total of 98 doctors were selected for training
including 73 doctors from 30 municipal hospitals in Shanghai
8 doctors from 7 hospitals in Xizang
and 17 doctors from 7 hospitals in Hainan. A 2-week online theoretical course and a 1-day offline practical training course were conducted. The theoretical exam scores
the operational exam pass rates
and the self-evaluation results of training effectiveness were recorded.
Results
2
Following training in the Advanced Life Support Core Skills course based on the OBE philosophy
with an "excellent" rate of 67.3% and a practical assessment pass rate of 86.7%. Univariate regression analysis showed that age
educational level
years of service
professional title
and region were all associated with theoretical scores (
P
<
0.05); Further analysis using multivariate linear regression revealed that only years of work experience
was an independent predictor of theoretical scores (
β
= 6.9
95% CI: 0.30–13.50)
while gender
age
educational level
professional title
and region showed no independent association (
P
>
0.05). Analysis of regional differences showed that the theoretical scores (141.10±12.30) and the percentage of students achieving excellent grades (76.70%) for participants in Shanghai were both higher than those in Hainan (132.00±16.60
52.90%) and Tibet (121.50±12.20
12.50%) (
P
<
0.001). In terms of self-assessment
the overall course satisfaction score was (4.65±0.54) points; 95.90% of participants were willing to recommend the course to colleagues
and 98.60% were willing to continue participating in advanced training. Among them
participants from Shanghai scored higher than those from Hainan and Tibet on both the knowledge mastery and teamwork dimensions (
P
<
0.05).
Conclusions
2
Advanced life support core skills training based on the OBE philosophy can enhance healthcare professionals' critical care skills. Age
educational background
professional title
and geographic location are not independent factors influencing theoretical test scores
and the training yields consistent and reliable results. This approach provides both a theoretical foundation and practical experience for future comprehensive critical care medicine core skills training
and its implementation in clinical continuing education programs is recommended.
