Practice and application of teaching reform integrating artificial intelligence and virtual simulation experiments in the Functional Experiments course
To investigate the enabling effects of the deep integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual simulation technologies on the teaching of the Functional Experiments course.
Methods
2
Based on the Functional Experiments course offered at Harbin Medical University (Daqing) during the first semester of the 2024-2025 academic year
88 undergraduate students majoring in Rehabilitation Therapy were enrolled and randomly assigned to either an experimental group (
n
=44) or a control group (
n
=44). The control group received the traditional teaching model combining multimedia-based teaching with on-site laboratory experiments
whereas the experimental group additionally received an AI + virtual simulation teaching model integrating AI tools and virtual simulation software. At the end of the semester
academic performance was evaluated and compared between the two groups using standardized examination questions and scoring criteria across experimental operation assessment
formative assessment
and comprehensive ability evaluation. In addition
a self-designed questionnaire was distributed to assess learning experience and satisfaction. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 22.0. Measurement data were expressed as mean±standard deviation and between-group comparisons were conducted using independent samples
t
-tests. Categorical data were expressed as number and percentage and between-group comparisons were performed using the chi-square test.
Results
2
Compared with the control group
the experimental group showed improvements in experimental operation/skills assessment score
comprehensive ability evaluation score
and total course score (27.85±1.87 vs. 23.41±1.73
36.11±2.27 vs. 31.09±2.06
92.42±3.51 vs. 83.22±3.39;
P
<
0.01). Questionnaire results showed that the proportion of students who were satisfied with the course was higher in the experimental group than in the control group [97.73% (43/44) vs. 86.36% (38/44)
P
=0.049
]
.
Conclusions
2
Compared with the traditional teaching model
the AI + virtual simulation teaching model effectively addressed some limitations of teaching conditions in the Functional Experiments course
and learning satisfaction. This model provides a practical pathway for advancing the digitalization and intelligent transformation of medical experimental education.
