Observations and inspirations on the collaborative training pathway for residents and clinician scientists in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco
The Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California
San Francisco has leveraged the T32 program to develop a collaborative training pathway for residents and clinician scientists. This pathway is grounded in a dual-guidance mechanism integrating research initiation education and mentorship during the standardized residency training. Integrated with the systematic research training provided by the T32 program
it facilitates a structured transition for residents from clinical practice towards independent research. This study systematically reviewed the collaborative mechanisms and support systems of this pathway
and summarized the key components for integrating residency training with scientific research
including goal setting
phase progression
resource co-development
and outcome evaluation. Considering the current state of medical imaging education in China
this paper proposed the establishment of an "integrated residency training and scientific research" mechanism
the enhancement of mentors' research competency
the improvement of the support system for scientific research and residency training
and recommendations for promoting the collaboration between medicine and education. These measures aim to provide a reference for the cultivation of research talents in medical imaging.
