To explore the prevalence of academic burnout among eight-year clinical medical students in Peking Union Medical College and its correlations with age
sex
sleep quality
life satisfaction
and physical exercise
and to provide a reference for alleviating the academic burnout of students in medical colleges.
Methods
2
This study utilized electronic questionnaires distributed to all eight-year clinical medical students at Peking Union Medical College in 2019 and 2024. SPSS 25.0 software was employed for descriptive statistics
t
-tests
analysis of variance
and Pearson correlation analysis.
Results
2
In 2024
the overall academic burnout score for students in the eight-year clinical medicine program was (60.57±12.64)
significantly higher than the normative score. Academic burnout scores in the first
third
fourth
and seventh academic years were significantly higher compared to 2019 [(55.59±12.51) vs. (51.06±8.89)
(59.65±12.10) vs. (49.31±12.16)
(67.45±10.71) vs. (58.88±12.67)
and (66.41±10.11) vs. (57.05±9.21)
]
. Significant differences in academic burnout levels were observed across all subgroups stratified by academic year
sex
primary learning approach
sleep quality
and physical exercise participation (
P
<
0.05). Weekly study/work hours
intention to pursue clinical work after graduation
and life satisfaction demonstrated significant correlations with academic burnout levels (
r
=-0.153
-0.338
-0.749
respectively;
P
<
0.001).
Conclusions
2
There was a notable prevalence of academic burnout among the eight-year clinical medical students
which continuously worsened and should be addressed by both the college and the students to improve the situation.
