Comparative analysis of standardized training systems for pediatric neurologists in China and the United States
Abstract
The standardized training system for pediatric neurologists in the United States has a long-established history
spanning three years as a pediatric neurology subspecialty training program following the completion of a three-year residency. This system has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). China's standardized training for pediatric neurologists remains in its early exploratory stages. This study employs a combination of historical literature analysis and comparative case study to systematically examine the current status and differences in the standardized training systems for pediatric neurologists in China and the United States. The findings reveal that the United States follows a "4+4+3+3" standardized physician training model supported by the ACGME accreditation system. A standardized training pathway has been established
encompassing multiple subspecialties
emphasizing adult neurology rotations
and incorporating continuous certification. China has developed a "5+3+X" standardized physician training framework. However
challenges remain in pediatric neurologist training
including insufficient training duration
limited curriculum specialization
and the absence of a national accreditation system. Based on these findings
the study proposes that China can draw from the successful experiences of the United States by extending subspecialty training duration
integrating adult neurology rotations
developing unified teaching materials
and establishing national examination standards and accreditation mechanisms. These measures aim to advance the standardized training of professional competency for pediatric neurologists
thereby laying a solid foundation for improving China's pediatric neurologist training system.
