Practical exploration of the "mentor + senior resident" model in the standardized training of general practice residents
To explore the implementation and preliminary effects of the "mentor + senior resident" model in standardized training of general practice residents
evaluate its impact on resident annual theory assessment scores and first-attempt pass rates of the medical licensing examination
and collect feedback during the training process
and to provide practical evidence for the optimization of the training model.
Methods
2
A retrospective analysis was conducted on 65 general practice residents who participated in standardized training at Bishan Hospital Affiliated to Chongqing Medical University in 2022 (
n
=22)
2023 (
n
=25)
and 2024 (
n
=18). Residents were divided into three groups based on training model: traditional single-mentor model (2022)
pilot introduction of senior resident assistance (2023)
and full implementation of the "mentor + senior resident" model (2024). Descriptive statistics and one-way analysis of variance were conducted using SPSS 26.0 software
used to compare first-attempt pass rates of the medical licensing examination and annual theory assessment scores (total score of 636). Qualitative data were collected through interviews and questionnaires.
Results
2
The first-attempt pass rate of of the medical licensing examination increased over the three years (from 56.52% to 86.36%)
but the difference was not statistically significant (
P
=0.068). There was no significant difference in mean annual theory assessment scores among the
three groups (420.91±75.49
406.29±69.02
and 398.39±58.42) for 2022
2023
and 2024
respectively (
F
=0.57
P
=0.571). However
qualitative feedback was generally positive
indicating that residents and mentors recognized potential advantages of the model in basic skill guidance
learning adaptability
psychological support
and teaching efficiency.
Conclusions
2
The "mentor + senior resident" model did not demonstrate a significant impact on resident annual theory assessment scores in this study. While qualitative feedback suggests potential value in improving the learning process and satisfaction
its overall effectiveness and generalizability in enhancing the core competencies of residents require confirmation through further research using more comprehensive assessment methods (e.g.
clinical skill evaluations).
