Objective
2
To assess the value of detecting retinal changes with pattern visual evoked potential (PVEP) combined with optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD).
Methods
2
This study was conducted among 31 patients with established diagnosis of AD in the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between August
2018 and November
2019
with 37 age-matched healthy elderly individuals from local community as the control group. All the subjects underwent examinations with both PVEP and OCT. The latency and amplitude of P100 wave in PVEP and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (pRNFL) thickness in each quadrant in OCT were recorded and compared between the two groups to assess the diagnostic value of these parameters for AD.
Results
2
Compared with the healthy control group
the patients with AD had significantly lowered amplitude of P100 wave (
P
<
0.05) without obvious changes in the latency of P100 wave (
P
>
0.05); they also exhibited significantly thinner pRNFL in the nasal
superonasal
superotemporal and inferotemporal quadrants (
P
<
0.05)
but not in the temporal or inferonasal quadrant (
P
>
0.05). ROC curve analysis showed that the area under curve (AUC) of a single functional or structural parameter of the retina was smaller than that of multiple retinal parameters combined.
Conclusion
2
The amplitude of P100 wave combined with superonasal and superotemporal pRNFL thickness has a high diagnostic value for AD
which supports the combination of PVEP and OCT for clinical diagnosis of AD.
