As a discipline bridging basic medicine and clinical medicine
pathology not only is irreplaceable in modern medicine
but also plays a 'golden' role for disease diagnosis in the era of precision medicine. The development of pathology in China has experienced hard times but still made remarkable achievements. However
in present
there still exist many problems
such as unclear position of the discipline
shortage of professionals
lack of diverse training approaches
and long period of personnel training
etc. Furthermore
the development of pathology faces many other challenges
such as increasing demands for precise diagnosis from clinicians
insufficient ability to interpret results from molecular pathology (including biological information)
and ineffective translational application of artificial intelligence in pathology (smart pathology). Meanwhile
pathology in China will usher in new historic opportunities for development since the importance of pathology becomes more prominent and attracts more public attention. Moreover
the subject platform for pathology is being improved continuously
and the centers for clinical pathology established through various forms and means have grown stronger and stronger. Therefore
pathology is in the spring season for booming development. This paper aims to discuss the challenges and opportunities faced by pathology in China.
