Association of negative cognitive processing bias and emotion regulation styles with depressive emotion in military personnel serving in high-altitude areas
To investigate the association of negative cognitive processing bias and emotion regulation types with depressive emotions in military personnel stationed in high-altitude areas.
Armymen's Emotion Regulation Types Questionnaire (AERTQ) and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) were adopted to survey 3 522 soldiers serving in areas at attitudes ranging from 1 100 m to 5 231 m. Descriptive
correlation and regression analyses
Chi
-square test
and mediating effect test with Bootstrap method of the data were carried out
and a structural equation model was constructed.
Results
2
The prevalence rate of depressive emotions was 29.2% among the surveyed participants. The occurrence of depressive emotions was positively correlated with the 4 factors of negative cognitive processing bias (attention
memory
interpretation
and contemplation)
cognitive focus
and behavior restraint (
r

0.01). Negative cognitive processing bias and the emotion regulation types could independently explain the variance of depressive emotion in the military personnel with explanation rates of 37.8% and 30.9%
respectively. Multiple mediation modeling showed that cognitive focus mediated the effect o
f negative cognitive processing bias on depressive emotions.
Conclusion
2
Negative cognitive processing bias and negative emotion regulation styles are risk factors for depressive emotions in military personnel stationed in high-altitude areas. Reducing the cognitive focus in individuals with high negative cognitive processing bias can help to reduce the incidence of depressive emotion in the military personnel.
