Effects of anxiety or depression on the outcomes of laparoscopic bariatric surgery in obese patients
To investigate the effects of anxiety or depression on the outcomes of laparoscopic bariatric surgery in obese patients.
Methods
2
A total of 112 obese patients who underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for weight loss were enrolled as research subjects. According to the anxiety and depression scores 3 days before surgery, patients were divided into the anxiety or depression group (
n
=43) and the normal mood group (
n
=69). The body mass index (BMI), waist-hip ratio, blood pressure, total cholesterol (TC), triacylglycerol (TG), C-reactive protein (CRP), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) were compared between the two groups at 3 days preoperatively, 6 months postoperatively, and 24 months postoperatively. The body weight rebound at 6 months and 24 months postoperatively was compared between the two groups.
Results
2
There was no significant difference in BMI, waist-hip ratio, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure,or levels of TC, TG, CRP, and IL-6 between the two groups at 3 days preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively (
P
0.05). At 24 months postoperatively, the anxiety or depression group had significantly higher BMI, waist-hip ratio, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and levels of TC, TG, CRP, and IL-6 than the normal mood group (
P
0.05). No significant difference in body weight rebound rate was observed between the two groups at 6 months postoperatively (
P
0.05), whereas the body weight rebound rate in the anxiety or depression group was significantly higher than that in the normal mood group at 24 months postoperatively (
P
0.05).
Conclusion
2
Anxiety or depression has little impact on the short-term weight loss outcome of laparoscopic bariatric surgery in obese patients, while exerts a significant effect on the long-term weight loss outcome.
