Applied clinical anatomy of the facial artery and perioral branches
To perform an anatomical study on the facial artery and its branches, aiming to elucidate the detailed vascular anatomy, variation patterns, and clinical significance in this region.
Methods
2
Nine adult head and face cadaveric specimens (18 sides) were dissected. The course and branching patterns of the facial artery were observed, and relevant data were measured using an electronic vernier caliper.
Results
2
Two sides were excluded due to severe damage to the facial artery, leaving 16 sides for final analysis. According to the Furukawa classification, the facial artery was categorized as follows: type 1 in 5 sides, type 2 in 8 sides, type 3 in 3 sides, and type 4 in none of the specimens. The branching patterns of the facial artery around the oral commissure were classified as follows: type Ⅰ in 10 sides, with the distance from the bifurcation point to the oral commissure being (33.22±14.05) mm; type Ⅱ in 6 sides, with the distance from the bifurcation of the superior labial artery to the oral commissure being (12.64±5.54) mm, and the distance from the bifurcation of the inferior labial artery to the oral commissure being (28.18±5.15) mm. A perpendicular line was drawn through the oral commissure parallel to the facial sagittal midline. The distances from the intersections of the superior and inferior labial arteries with this perpendicular line to the oral commissure were (7.70±1.61)mm and (15.52±6.83)mm,respectively. The distance from the intersection of the inferior labial artery with the vertical line to the inferior border of the mandible was (22.39±6.81)mm. The distance from the origin of the facial artery to the mandibular angle was (26.42±3.18)mm,and the external diameter of the origin of the facial artery was (2.98±0.60)mm.
Conclusion
2
The facial artery and its perioral branches exhibit considerable anatomical variations. A thorough understanding of these variations is a fundamental prerequisite for improving the success rate of related surgeries and ensuring the safety of minimally invasive procedures.
