Relief effects of three minimally invasive treatment methods on patients with postherpetic neuralgia
To investigate the treatment effects of three minimally invasive treatment methods neural blockade (NB), pulsed radiofrequency (PRF), and short-term spinal cord stimulation (st-SCS) on patients with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN).
Methods
2
The data of 204 patients with PHN who were admitted to our hospital from December 2021 to December 2023 were analyzed, and the baseline differences among the groups were balanced by propensity score matching. Patients were divided into the NB group (
n
=67), the PRF group (
n
=14), and the st-SCS group (
n
=47) according to different treatment methods, and the general data were compared among groups. Pain numeric rating scale (NRS) scores and Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD) scores at admission, discharge, and 4 weeks after dischar
ge of each group were recorded; a latent class growth model was used to analyze pain trajectories.
Results
2
There were statistically significant differences in the hospital stay and use of antidepressant among patients in each treatment group (
P
<
0.05). Among them, patients in the st-SCS group had the longest hospital stay and the highest proportion of antidepressant administration. The NRS scores at different time points among patients in each treatment group showed no statistically significant differences (
P
>
0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in the pain trajectory distribution among patients in each treatment group (
P
>
0.05). The depression scores at different time points among patients in each treatment group also showed no statistically significant differences (
P
>
0.05).
Conclusion
2
Three treatment methods NB,PRF and st-SCS show similar short-term effects in the relief of pain. However, NB may be more cost-effective and recommended as the initial treatment; st-SCS requires a relatively longer hospital stay but is suitable for patients with complex and severe pain.
