Observation of the therapeutic effect of probucol on 46 cases of diabetic nephropathy
Objective To evaluate the therapeutic effect of probucol on delaying the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Methods One-hundred-and-two type II diabetes patients with albuminuria (microalbuminuria >1.9 mg/dl) were divided in a probucol group (500 mg/d
n
=51) and a control group (
n
=51) based on the routine drug treatment. A follow-up survey was carried out for 6 months
i
n which the blood pressure
blood lipid (TC
TG
LDL-C and HDL-c)
renal function (s-Cr
BUN and cys-c)
urine protein (microalbuminuria and 24 h urine protein)
glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c)
hypersensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP)
and liver function (AST
ALT and GGT) were detected. Statistical analyses were also conducted. Results During the 6-month follow-up
the data of 5 patients of probucol group and 3 patients of control group were lost. The blood lipid (TC
TG and LDL-c)
cys-c and hs-CRP of the probucol group after treatment were significantly lower than those of the probucol group before treatment and the control group (
P
<
0.05). The increases of s-Cr
BUN
microalbuminuria and 24-h urine protein in the probucol group were significantly lower than those in the control group (
P
<
0.05). Based on the administration of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor/angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB/ACEI) drugs (
n
=48)
probucol could suppress the increases of cys-c
hs-CRP
microalbuminuria and 24-h urine protein (
P
<
0.05). Conclusion Probucol can reduce the urine protein content and improve the renal function of DN patients
thus delaying the progression of DN. Besides
probucol has a synergic effect with ARB/ACEI drugs on the prevention and treatment of DN.
