Vascular endothelium functions and arterial flexibility by MRI in health youth: a fundamental study
Objective To evaluate the role of MRI in determining vascular endothelium functions and arterial flexibility and obtain normal reference ranges of each index. M
ethods A total of 26 healthy male young volunteers
aging from 20 to 22
were enrolled in this study. Their flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and aortic distensibility (AD) were measured by 3.0T MRI through using fast imaging with steady state free precession (TureFISP) sequence. Results FMD value of femoral artery was (11.26±2.67)%. The largest area of ascending aorta (AA)
proximal descending aorta (PDA) and distal descending aorta (DDA) in end-systole was (600.9±115.7)
(369.6±59.8) and (310.7±58.1) mm
2
respectively. The minimum area in end-diastole was (449.2±92.3)
(287.4±59.7) and (221.9±41.2) mm
2
respectively. The AD value of AA
PDA and DDA was (10.04±3.29)×10
-3
/mmHg
(8.54±4.78)×10
-3
/mmHg and (11.80±4.56)×10
-3
/mmHg
respectively. The femoral artery diameter in end-diastole changed significantly after compression (
P
<
0.01). There were markedly difference between the largest area of AA
PDA and DDA in end-systole and the minimum area in end-diastole. Conclusion Using MRI to examine vascular endothelium functions and artery flexibility is a safe
noninvasive and repeatable method
and has high tissue resolution
which could contribute to prophase detection of cardiovascular disease and provide evidence for clinical early treatment.
