Clinical application of carotid angioplasty with stenting using cerebral protection technology: report of 1 328 cases
Objective To observe the clinical efficacy and safety of cerebral protection devices and stent angioplasty in the treatment of patients with carotid artery stenosis. Methods The clinical data of 1 328 patients with carotid stenosis treated with cerebral protection devices and stent angioplasty in the departments of cardiology and neurology from 4 different hospitals from April 2003 to June 2010 were analyzed retrospectively. The safety and efficacy of the operation was analyzed. Results Cerebral protection devices were smoothly implanted into the skull of these 1 328 cases through carotid artery. The average carotid artery stenosis rate was decreased from (88.2±6.7)% before treatment to (19.2±1
1.1)% after treatment
with significant difference (
P
<
0.01). There were 768 patients who were followed up for average 1 year. During the period
no one case was died
nor ischemic stroke occurred. Conclusion Cerebral protection devices and stent angioplasty is safe and efficient in the treatment of carotid artery stenosis and prevention of ischemic stroke.
