Rapid kindling is an animal model of epilepsy in which repeated electrical stimulations lead to progressive and permanent amplification of seizure activity. The present strdy was designed to observe morphological change in hippocampus of rapid kindling rats which were diveded into 3 groups:immediate
post-two and seven-day groups.Results show:Lightly and ultrastructurally
there are no pathological changes in hippocampus of the immediate group. But abnormal increase of neuronal activity was observed. The 2-day group shows significantly degeneration and the loss of neuron. In seven day group the pathological alteration degree was lightened and the number of normal neuron increased compared with the 2-day group.Meanwhile a number of gliacytes appeared in the lesion area. These suggest that occurene of kindling can be disassociated from a structure lesion of hippocampus. The neuronal degeneration which apeared after kindling is the result of the kindling. The long-lasting brain function change of kindling animal may relate to lose of neurons、nervous fiber axon sprouting、synaptic reorganiziton and gliacytes proloferation afterr the kindlin.
