OBJECTIVE: To provide reference for improving the application of intelligent dispensing system in outpatient pharmacy. METHODS: The main problems existed in intelligent dispensing systems of outpatient pharmacy in our hospital were analyzed, and the relative improvement measures and achievements were summarized. RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS: There still were some problems which can not be ignored, such as cumbersome drug expiry management method, drug delivery error easily caused by dispensing system, low proportion of drug delivered by machine, uneven distribution of prescription drug windows, low proportion of account agreeing with physical inventory, complex inventory data summary. A series of improvement measures were formulated in our hospital, including standardizing drug supplement procedure, rationally using injection cabinet of drug dispensing system, reducing the amount of prescriptions in each window by adjusting software settings, importing and converting data by Excel, etc. After improvement, the drug expiry management method for intelligent dispensing system was simplified and controllable; the rate of drug delivery error decreased from 0.43% to 0.33%; the proportion of drug delivered by machine increased from 59% to 76%; the difference of prescription amount among theses windows decreased, and the frequency of adding drugs for some types decreased from 16 times/day to 5 times/day; the proportion of account agreeing with physical inventory increased from 89.1% to 96.3%; the duration of inventory data summary shortened, etc. These measures not only effectively utilize dispensing machine, but also improve work efficiency and quality, reduce the workload of related staff and promote the level of drug dispensing service.
