A survey on AIDS knowledge awareness and sex education developments among front-line teachers in basic education in Sichuan province
Objective To understand AIDS knowledge awareness among front-line teachers in basic education
schools’ attitudes towards sex education and sex education developments
in Sichuan province to provide a basis for formulating scientific sex education strategies. Methods A convenience sampling method was used to select 608 front-line teachers of basic education in Sichuan province
including primary and secondary school teachers and secondary vocational teachers in moral education. The AIDS knowledge awareness questionnaire among young students and a self-developed sex education questionnaire were employed in the survey. The respondents were tested in batches through the Questionnaire platform WJX. The obtained data were statistically analyzed. Results A total of 59.9% of the respondents had not received systematic sex education. The AIDS knowledge awareness rate was 82.2%(500/608). There was a significant difference in the AIDS knowledge awareness rate among the respondents in different phases of studying(P<0.05)
but there was no significant difference in the AIDS awareness rate among the participants who were different in gender
age
location of the school and systematic sex education(all P>0.05). In daily teaching
24.3% of the respondents often conducted sex education to students in teaching
60.5% rarely conducted sex education in teaching
and 15.2% never conducted sex education in teaching. In response to the question "What are the biggest challenges facing current sex education?"
50.7% of respondents believed that teachers and parents lacked sexual knowledge. At the same time
80.3% of the respondents believed that the current sex education was too conservative; 51.3% held that sex education was important; 53.3% thought that it was very necessary to conduct sex education courses in their schools; 57.2% believed that the working attitude towards sex education was proactive; 59.2% believed that parents should bear the main responsibility for sex education of students
and 21.1% believed that schools should bear the main responsibility for sex education of students. In addition
23.0% of the respondents wanted to include sexual psychology knowledge and 20.4% wanted to include sexual physiology knowledge most for the content of sex health education classes opened in schools. Conclusion The AIDS awareness rate among front-line teachers in basic education in Sichuan province still needs to be improved
and special education should be carried out systematically.
