A survey on the current situation of adolescent scoliosis in Yuzhong County, Gansu Province
Objective To understand the current situation of adolescent scoliosis in Yuzhong County
Gansu Province
in order to provide a reference for the relevant departments to develop prevention and treatment measures for scoliosis in primary and secondary school students. Methods A total of 36 728 school students aged 6-18 years in 192 primary and secondary schools in Yuzhong County
Gansu Province
were used for scoliosis screening by the triple-examination method(physical examination
scoliosis measuring tape examination
and X-ray examination). Results Among the study subjects
827 were determined to be positive after the first and second examinations
with a positive detection rate of 2.25%. Meanwhile
the number of participants in the third test was 104
and 58 people were positively detected in the third test
with a detection rate of 55.77%. The prevalence of spinal abnormalities among primary and secondary school students in Yuzhong County
Gansu Province
was calculated to be 1.26%. Among the triple-examination study subjects
58 had radiographs showing spinal abnormalities: 44 of them had Cobb angles greater than or equal to 10°(30 with Cobb angles of 10° to 20°
13 with Cobb angles of 20° to 40°
and 1 with Cobb angle greater than 40°). Of the study subjects diagnosed with spinal anomalies
21 were male and 37 were female. The most common type of spinal abnormality among male and female students was Cobb angle greater than or equal to 10°(15 males and 29 females)
followed by Scheuermann’s disease(3 males and 6 females). The study subjects diagnosed with spinal anomalies had the highest number of detections in the 11-<12 years age group with 9 detections
followed by the 10-<11 years age group with 8 detections
and the third was the 12-<13 years age group with 7 detections. Conclusion Screening for scoliosis among primary and secondary school students helps in early detection and treatment and is important for the prevention and treatment of scoliosis.
