Application of self-designed integrative irrigation and drainage tube in the treatment of deep infection after spinal surgery
Objective: To observe the clinical effect of self-designed integrative irrigation and drainage tube in the treatment of deep infection after spinal surgery. Methods: Among the 32 patients with deep infection after spinal surgery who were admitted to our department from January 2012 to December 2017
12 received treatment with selfdesigned integrative irrigation and drainage tube(group A)
and 20 received treatment with conventional integrative irrigation and drainage tube(group B). After thorough debridement
one or two integrative irrigation and drainage tubes were inserted into the deep incision which then underwent primary closure. Continuous irrigation was performed for 7 to 14 days after surgery
and effective antibiotics were administered concurrently. The two groups were observed for surgical outcomes and incidence of postoperative irrigation of drainage tube blockage and outlet leakage. Results: All the patients in the two groups were operated successfully. The incision healing was good
satisfactory outcomes were achieved in infection treatment
and none of the cases had a recurrence. There were no significant differences in the time of operation
intraoperative blood loss
postoperative irrigation time
and visual analogue scale score for local incision pain at the last follow-up between group A and group B. The incidence of drainage tube blockage was 16.7%(2 cases) for group A and 15%(3 cases) for group B. The incidence of drainage tube outlet leakage was significantly lower in group A than in group B(25% [3 cases] vs 45% [9 cases]). Conclusion: Self-designed integrative irrigation and drainage tube is safe and effective in treating deep infection after spinal surgery; it can achieve a clinical effect comparable to that of a conventional irrigation and drainage tube. Moreover
it is simple to assemble during a surgery
and has a relatively low incidence of drainage tube outlet leakage. All these make it especially suitable for use in primary hospitals where finished products of irrigation and drainage tubes are not available and in severely infected patients who need a relatively long time of irrigation and drainage.
