Self-rated health conditions in the elderly over 60 years old in rural poverty areas of Xuyong County, Luzhou, Sichuan Province, China
Objective: To analyze the physical condition of the elderly over 60 years old in Xuyong County
Luzhou
and to provide a scientific basis for determination of health intervention measures for the elderly
prevention and control of major senile diseases
and improving the health of the elderly. Methods: Residential health records during October 2014 to November 2018 were gained through the health statistical yearbook and the primary health medical information system database of Sichuan province. The data were entered by Excel 2007
and a descriptive analysis was carried out by SPSS 22.0. Results: The prevalence rates of hypertension
diabetes mellitus
chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
coronary heart disease
and stroke were 34.3%
6.2%
1.8%
3.8%
and 0.9%
respectively
in the usually resident population over 60 years old in Xuyong County
Luzhou. The prevalence rates of the five chronic diseases first increased(starting at ages of 60 to 64 years) and then decreased. The female had higher prevalence rates of diabetes and coronary heart disease than the male. The prevalence rates of the chronic diseases in the elderly varied between different marital status. In terms of risk factors
insufficient physical exercise showed the highest exposure rate of 94.9%
followed by dyslipidemia with an exposure rate of 37.4%. The proportions of the elderly feeling "satisfied" with their health status were all over 80% in population free of exposure to risk factors
population with exposure to risk factors
and the elderly with chronic diseases. Conclusion: Relevant authorities should take measures to improve the health awareness of the elderly
strengthen health intervention for them
and enhance construction of elderly community
providing physical and mental support for the elderly
especially for those just entering into old age and those getting divorced.
