Efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion for neurogenic bladder in patients with spinal cord injury: A meta analysis
Objective We performed a meta analysis and systematic review to assess the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion for neurogenic bladder in patients with spinal cord injury
so as to provide evidence for clinical practice.Methods Databases including PubMed
China National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI)
CBM disc
and Wanfang Database(from inception up to now)were searched to collect randomized controlled trials(RCTS)of acupuncture and moxibustion for neurogenic bladder following spinal cord injury.The quality of evidence was rated using the GRADEprofiler software
and the outcome measures were analyzed using the Revman 5.3 and STATA 13.0 software.Results A total of 18 RCTs involving 1 233 patients(trial group
n=619;control group
n=614)were included in this meta analysis.Results showed that acupuncture had a significantly higher response rate than the control group(OR=4.91;95%CI:2.79-8.64;P=0.000);similar results were also observed for electro-acupuncture(OR=4.17;95%CI:2.18-7.97;P=0.000)
moxibustion(OR=3.83;95%CI:2.27-6.45;P=0.000)
and elongated needle therapy(OR=2.86;95%CI:1.26-6.49;P<0.01).When the results of all the studies were pooled for analysis
acupuncture and moxibustion was demonstrated to be superior to other therapies(OR=4.04;95%CI:2.98-5.49;P=0.000).Conclusion Acupuncture and moxibustion seems to be effective in treating neurogenic bladder following spinal cord injury
which deserves widespread clinical application.However
most of the included studies were of poor quality
and thus more high-quality
multi-center
large-scale clinical RCTs are required to confirm these findings.
