Impact of mobile phone addiction tendency on quality of sleep among university students:the mediation effect of sense of security
Objective To investigate the impact of mobile phone addiction tendency and sense of security on the quality of sleep among university students
so as to provide the theoretical basis for improving the quality of sleep by addressing mobile phone addiction tendency and sense of security. Methods Based on cluster sampling
a total of 217 students from a Guizhou university participated in the anonymous questionnaire survey. The General Condition Questionnaire
Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index(PSQI)
Mobile Phone Addiction Tendency Scale(MPATS)
and Security Questionnaire(SQ)were used in this study. Results Among these university students
the PSQI score varied significantly with major
family financial status
family atmosphere
and the type of mobile phone(P<0.05).Specifically
students majoring in Literature
History
Law
Philosophy as well as Arts and Sports had higher PSQI scores than students of Science & Technology
Agriculture and Medicine majors;students whose family financial status was poor or medium scored higher on the PSQI scale than students whose family financial status was good;students whose family atmosphere was stressful or medium had higher PSQI scores than students whose family atmosphere was harmonious;Android or Apple mobile phone users scored higher on the PSQI scale than non-smart phone users.Correlation analysis showed that
the quality of sleep was positively correlated with mobile phone addiction tendency(P<0.05)and negatively with sense of security(P<0.05);and mobile phone addiction tendency was negatively correlated with sense of security(P<0.05).Regression analysis revealed that
mobile phone addiction tendency could positively predict quality of sleep(P <0.05)and negatively predict sense of security(P <0.05);both mobile phone addiction tendency and sense of security could predict quality of sleep(P<0.05).The sense of security had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between mobile phone addiction tendency and quality of sleep. Conclusion University students have generally poor quality of sleep
especially students majoring in Arts and Sports as well as those whose family atmosphere was stressful. It is important for university students to decrease their dependency on mobile phone and increase their sense of security
which may help to improve their quality of sleep.
