The difference of gender and sexual experience on the knowledge and attitude of one-night stand among university students
Objectives To investigate the impact of gender and sexual experience on the current situation
knowledge and attitude of one-night stand among university students
so as to provide insights into sexual health education strategies and interventions. Methods A self-designed questionnaire was used for the online anonymous survey among 813 university students. Results About 20.7% of these students reported that they had a premarital sex history
and 6.2% had one-night stand experience;29.8% of those with a premarital sex history also had one-night stand experience.Among the students with a premarital sex history
63.1% used condoms every time they had sex
27.4% reported occasional condom use
and 9.5% never used condoms. In students who had one-night stand experience
the proportion of those who used condoms every time they had sex was significantly lower and the proportion of those who never used condoms was significantly higher compared with students without such an experience(both P<0.05).Up to 42.6% of the surveyed students believed that one-night stand was acceptable(more males than females)
and the proportion was even higher(76.0%)in those who already had one-night stand experience. The thought of one-night stand was reported in27.2% of the interviewees. The proportion of students who had the thought or would attempt or seek for onenight stand was much higher in males than that in females
and the proportion was even higher in those who already had one-night stand experience(both P<0.05).The proportions of students who chose the main reason for one-night stand to be "physiological need"
"spiritual emptiness"
or "impulse" were 74.7%
70.5% and68.8%
respectively;particularly
38.6% of female students reported a reason of " benefit exchange".Conclusion Most university students hold open and tolerant attitudes towards one-night stand.Although up to now only a small proportion of students have had such an experience
a sharp rise is likely to occur in the future. Thus
it is important to develop multi-channel strategies to enhance sexual health education among university students
especially male students and those having one-night stand experience
help them establish proper sexual concepts
correct their sexual behaviors
and improve their awareness of safe sex.
