Outcome Evaluation of the Public Service Advertising with the Theme of " Cigarette as A Gift=Harmful Intention" in Chongqing
Objective To evaluate the anti-smoking intervention effect of the public service advertising with the theme of "cigarette as a gift=harmful intention"
so as to provide scientific evidence for future anti-smoking initiatives. Methods By convenience sampling
aquestionnaire survey was conducted in the target population at a designated site. The survey was performed both before and after the launch of the public service advertising with the theme of "cigarette as a gift=harmful intention"
at the same place. Results The proportion of respondents who agreed that "smoking is bad for health" was lower before the advertising initiative than that after advertising
but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).However
the proportion of respondents who thought that "the harms of smoking are being overestimated in our daily life" was significantly higher before advertising than that after advertising(P<0.05).The proportion of respondents who agreed or highly agreed that "cigarette is a very good gift" was significantly decreased from 20.10% and 2.03% before advertising to 13.44% and 0.58% after advertising
respectively(both P<0.05).The proportion of respondents who reported " heavier smoking within the past 30days" was significantly reduced from 16.55% before advertising to 10.40% after advertising(P<0.05).Moreover
57.14% of smokers reported that the advertising increased their likelihood of giving up smoking;the smoking rate was decreased from 41.22%to 40.75%
but the difference was not statistically significant(P>0.05).The proportion of respondents who reported " very likely or extremely likely to present cigarette as a gift" was significantly decreased from 12.16% and 12.33%before advertising to 7.23% and 3.32% after advertising
respectively(both P <0.05).Conclusion Antismoking intervention via the public service advertising with the theme of "cigarette as a gift=harmful intention" has favorable outcomes.Facing the challenges ahead
however
it is imperative to develop more comprehensive and effective anti-smoking measures to benefit more people.
