Objective To investigate the awareness of AIDS prevention and treatment knowledge among college students of 15 provinces and cities so as to provide targeted recommendations for AIDS prevention and health education in universities and colleges.Methods 7 851 students in liberal arts

sciences

medicine

arts

sports and other majors from 60 colleges and universities of 15 provinces

municipalities and autonomous regions were surveyed with questionnaires and 7 661 valid questionnaires were collected.Results In this survey

the awareness of eight items of AIDS basic knowledge of which the State made clear and specific provisions to the public（referred as eight items）was 77.2% and the awareness of overall questionnaire was relatively low

only 57.1%.the full-mark rates of eight items and overall questionnaire were respectively 32.2% and 7.4%.The awareness and full-mark rates of eight items and overall questionnaire were different in students with different majors and the differences were statistically significant（P<0.01）

in which medical students had highest awareness of eight items and overall questionnaire

followed by science and engineering students

and the lowest were among the arts and sports students.The students in arts

sports and other majors had the lowest accuracy on most entries of the questionnaire and medical students had the highest accuracy.Conclusion The awareness of AIDS knowledge among college students is still much room for improvement.The accuracy of some entries of the questionnaire were still low

therefore

AIDS prevention and health education for students must be strengthened and the contents must be comprehensive

systematic and focused and especially

the content of AIDS epidemic should be updated.Meanwhile

for the low awareness among students in arts and sports

they should be paid more attention to AIDS prevention health education.In a particular embodiment of AIDS prevention health education process

it can take peer education.
