The mediating role of negative affect on the relationship between perceived social support and mental health in engineering soldiers after deployment for peacekeeping
Objective To analyze the relationships of perceived social support
negative effect and mental health of soldiers served in engineering group after deployment for peacekeeping. Methods Two hundreds and sixty-five soldiers deployed for engineering support in peacekeeping mission were surveyed with the perceived social support scale (PSSS)
positive and negative affect scale (PANAS)
and symptom checklist 90 (SCL-90). Results ①The SCL-90 score of engineering soldiers after deployment was significantly higher than in the army’s norm and control group(P005). ②Perceived social support was significantly negatively correlated to positive affect and mental health
respectively(r=-0.22
-0.17
P0.01). A significantly positive correlation was found between negative affect and mental health(r=0.36,P0.01). ③Path analytic model revealed that the relationship between perceived social support and mental health was mediated by negative effect. Conclusion The mental health level of soldiers in engineering group after deployment was generally low. Negative affect plays a full mediatory role in the relationship between perceived social support and mental health.
