Relationship of perceived social support and positive and negative affect with maladjustment in engineering corps after peacekeeping action deployment
Objective To determine the effect of perceived social support and positive negative affect on maladjustment in post-deployed soldiers from peacekeeping engineering group. Methods A total of 280 post-deployed soldiers from 3 military commands in the corps of peacekeeping engineering group who were within 3 years after deployment were recruited in this study. Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS)
Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS)
and Military Mental Maladjustment Scale (MMMS) were employed to survey the soldiers. Results ① The MMMS score of post-deployed soldiers were significantly lower than that of the army’s norm. Overall
14.7% soldiers were found to have maladjustment
including 3.8%
6.4%
8.3% and 3.4% respectively for behavioral
emotional
interpersonal and environmental maladjustment. ② There was negative correlation of maladjustment with perceived social support and positive affect (r=-0.26
-0.17
P0.01)
and positive correlation with negative affect (r=0.32
P0.01). ③ Path analytic model revealed that perceived social support had negative predictive value for maladjustment (β=-0.13
P0.05). Positive negative affect exerted meditative effect in the relationship between perceived social support and maladjustment. Conclusion Engineering soldiers after peacekeeping action deployment have a good quality of adjustment. Perceived social support and positive and negative affect are important factors to influence maladjustment in them.
